The Wilderland (Third Age)

  • 2 - Disaster of the Gladden Fields; death of Isildur; loss of the One Ring
  • c. 1050 - the Shadow takes shape in the Greenwood, which is renamed 'Mirkwood' (around this time a good number of Hobbits migrate from the Vales of the Anduin to Eriador, although a good number remain)
  • c.1200 - Northmen given wide lands 'beyond the Anduin south of Greenwood the Great' by Gondor (The East Bight is the result of settlement of the region along the eastern eaves of Mirkwood)
  • 1248 - Minalcar (Rómendacil II) leads a great force and defeats the Easterlings between Rhovanion and the Inland Sea of Rhûn.
  • 1250 - Rómendacil II sends his son Valacar to dwell with Vidugavia, Northman King of Rhovanion. Valacar marries Vidumavi, daughter of Vidugavia.
  • c. 1300 - return of the Ringwraiths; foundation of Angmar
  • 1432 - Eldacar (born Vinitharya) is crowned King of Gondor 
  • 1437-1447 - Kin-Strife in Gondor; Eldacar flees to Rhovanion
  • 1447 - Restoration of King Eldacar
  • 1635 - Great Plague strikes down over half of the people of Rhovanion
  • 1851 - Wainriders begin to attack Rhovanion and eastern Gondor
  • 1856 - Battle of the Plains - destruction of the combined army of the Gondorians and Rhovanion Northmen; enslavement of the people of Rhovanion; Marhwini leads fugitives to the vales of the Anduin, from which the beginnings of the Éothéod are traced (Éothéod dwell between the Gladden Fields and the Carrock)
  • 1899 - King Calimehtar, in alliance with Marhwini, inflicts a serious defeat on the Wainriders upon the Dagorlad, but the Wainraiders are not driven from Rhovanion
  • 1944 - Wainraiders again attack Gondor; kill King Ondoher, but are defeated by Eärnil. Rhovanion remains under Wainrider control
  • 1975 - end of Angmar following the Battle of Fornost (in Eriador)
  • 1977 - Frumgar leads the Éothéod to the northern Anduin vales
  • 1980 - the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm awaken the Balrog, and are force to flee.
  • 1999 - Thráin I, King of Durin's folk, founds the Kingdom of Erebor at the Lonely Mountain.
  • c. 2000 - Fram becomes Lord of the Éothéod, and slays the Dragon Scatha, claiming his hoard. The Dwarves of the Grey Mountains claim the hoard; this leads to conflict with the Éothéod.
  • 2063 - Gandalf investigates Dol Guldur; Shadow flees East; Beginning of the Watchful Peace
  • 2210 - Thorin I, son of Thráin, establishes the royal halls of the House of Durin in the Grey Mountains
  • 2460 - Necromancer returns to Dol Guldur; darkness creeps back into Mirkwood
  • 2463 - formation of the White Council to oppose the Shadow
    (around this time Déagol finds the One Ring in the Gladden River; he is murdered by Sméagol, who eventually flees to the Misty Mountains)
  • c. 2480 - Orcs begin to make secret strongholds in the Misty Mountains, so as to bar all the passes into Eriador. Moria is filled with evil folk.
  • 2510 - Riders of Éothéod, led by Eorl, ride south to assist Gondor, departing the Vale of the Anduin to settle Rohan
  • 2570 - in the reign of Náin II, a plague of Dragons afflict the Dwarven mansions in the Grey Mountains.
  • 2589 - King Dáin I is slain by a Cold-drake in the Grey Mountains.
  • 2590 - Thrór reestablishes the Kingdom of Erebor; Grór goes to the Iron Hills (around this time the city of Dale is established under the tutelage of the Dwarves)
  • 2740 - Orcs begin to focus their raids in Eriador, from Mount Gram
  • 2747 - Battle of Greenfields, where the Hobbits of Shire defeat the orcs of Mount Gram
  • 2758 / 59 - Long Winter and war between Dale and the Easterlings; death of King Bladorthin.
  • 2770 - Smaug the Golden sacks Erebor and Dale; King Thrór escapes into exile.
  • 2790 - Thrór, Dwarven King in Exile, is slain in Moria by the Great Orc Azog. 
  • 2793-99 - War of the Dwarves and Orcs; Death of Azog
    (following this Thráin and Thorin settle in Blue Mountains in 2802)
  • 2841 - Thráin attempts to return to Erebor, but disappears in Mirkwood in 2845
  • 2850 - Gandalf enters Dol Guldur, finds the dying Thráin, key and map
  • 2851 - White Council declines to act against the Shadow in Dol Guldur
  • 2890 - Bilbo Baggins is born in the Shire
  • 2900 - Radagast encourages settlement in the Western Eaves and middle Anduin vale
  • 2911 - Fell Winter; following floods extend the Long Marsh, closing off the Old Forest Road.
  • 2941 - Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, thirteen dwarves and Bilbo Baggins set out on their quest; Death of Smaugh; Battle of the Five Armies; Restoration of the Kingdom Under the Mountain and of Dale.

  • 2942 - Bilbo Baggins returns to Shire
    (Dark Lord returns to Mordor)
  • 2943 - Master of Lake-town flees with gold; dies in the wilderness
  • 2944 - Gollum leaves his lair under the Misty Mountains
  • 2944-45 - Bard completes the reconstruction of Dale; new Lake-town is completed; Beorn establishes his rule of the Beornings.
